Static Equipment Engineer

rbh At Burns & McDonnell, I designed a range of refinery equipment such as pressure vessels, process columns, shell & tube heat exchangers, and storage tanks. My responsibilities included performing design calculations, preparing technical specifications, evaluating vendor bids, and reviewing vendor drawings for accuracy and compliance.

In one of my major roles, I served as the Responsible Engineer for two shell and tube heat exchanger packages, overseeing 11 shell and tube heat exchangers, with some reaching pressures of over 2000 psi and temperatures reaching 750°F. I used engineering software such as COMPRESS, PV Elite, and HTRI, for design and analysis along with Navisworks for model reviews. I worked within industry standards like ASME BPVC and API codes, ensuring designs met both client requirements and regulatory standards. My work also involved interdisciplinary coordination, consulting with clients, vendors, and other teams to ensure smooth project execution.

During a significant retrofit project, I helped the client avoid tens of thousands in costs by challenging a vendor's proposed field modifications for the vessel supports. By referencing Civil department code requirements, I guided the vendor toward a solution that eliminated the need for expensive fieldwork. Additionally, I corrected the vendor’s evaluation of equipment weld designs to ensure compliance with ASME Section VIII, Division I. In yet another instance, I advised a subtle change to gasket dimensions, avoiding a costly flange redesign. These experiences honed my problem solving skills and deep industry code understanding.

In addition to my core engineering tasks, I trained new engineers on design software and industry practices. I also delivered a seminar on saddle design for horizontal vessels, sharing critical insights based on ASME BPVC Section VIII guidelines.
